What

ACAVA’s Young Artists Programme is a weekly term-time programme for 7 to 11 years old living in North Kensington and delivered over the course of the school year. Each term, a small cohort of young people co-create with a visiting professional artist and explore what art is and can be, by experimenting with new materials and processes. YAP was developed after the success of our school holiday programme Flourish. The Young Artists Programme encourages participants to develop their ideas playfully as well as enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills whilst offering a deeper understanding of visual art practice. The project might include trips to art galleries, Covid regulations permitting, as well as the chance to gain an Arts Award Discover. We are inviting local children aged between 7-11 years old to join us on 14 April at 10h30 for a face-to-face taster session with Anna Reading, the artist delivering the Young Artists Programme next term. During the session children will create a 3D miniature world in the form of a peepshow box, using techniques adapted from Victorian Paper Peepshows. Made from layered paper panels, each with its own action-packed scene, the participants will play with the illusion of depth and space and use drawing, collage and simple building techniques of cutting and slotting card to make fantastical locations to visit from their own homes. Children will be able to sign up for the summer term of the Young Artists Programme. Adhering to Covid-safe regulations, places are limited and booking is essential. Places will be offered on a first come first served basis assuming children meet the criteria of the programme. Anna Reading is a London based artist working in sculpture, installation, moving image, performance and text. Her practice focuses on creating imagined landscapes that appear both worldly and otherworldly. She will be exploring these themes with the young artists during her sessions. Our Young Artists Programme is supported by the Grenfell Projects Fund, a funding stream from Kensington and Chelsea Council, focused on enhancing lives of those impacted by the Grenfell Tower fire.
