What we've funded: Our Choice Grant
The Our Choice grant is our first grant dedicated to supporting to girls, young women and LGBT+ children and young people. Girls, young women and LBGTQIA+ young people are all underrepresented in local youth activities and the projects funded through this grant aim to reduce the inequality across the sector.
These projects will work with these groups of children and young people to find better solutions and create lasting support across Kensington and Chelsea.
Eristars is a supplementary school supporting children and young people through education and support. This weekly Saturday session will support 11-18 year old young women to build confidence and create new relationship in their local area. This session is a result of the young women in the Eristars network asking for a dedicated space for them.
Working with a group of LGBT+ young people, the Fashion School will give young people the space to create their own garments inspired by iconic performers. Young people will finish their project with visits to local museums and a talk with a designer to encourage originality and provide a space for empowerment.
Over the summer holidays, Fit For Life Youth will be providing girls aged 11+ with a much sought after space for female only boxing sessions coupled with wellbeing sessions. The project aims to provide young people a space to connect their mental wellbeing with healthy outlets.
Hornimans Adventure Playground
"All Girls Play" gives girls and young women aged 8+ the opportunity for free play and activities at Hornimans Adventure Playground. Girls have relayed to staff that they want a regular session to just play and hang out together in a space made just for them.
Leader by female footballer, girls and young women will train for 2 hours each week, becoming a close knit team. This session enables girls the opportunity to be in a safe environment and see the benefit of sport whilst also exploring football as a fun sport.
As a local community theatre, the Playground Theatre will be working with a group of LGBT+ young people to read and discuss a play. The group will provide a safe space for LGBT+ young people to discuss the issues facing them in their day to day lives.
Working with a group of Ukrainian young people, St Mary's Ukrainian School will teach young girls IT skills. Participants will learn how IT can be a valuable career whilst learning new skills over 3 months.
