Home Reading Volunteer
Doorstep Library is looking for volunteers, either in person or online, to join their team to bring the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of families who need their support.
Volunteers visit the same families on a regular basis and hand pick books or e-books to fuel children’s natural love of stories, fire their imaginations, and encourage their appreciation of reading. Our unique home-based service means we are there in person or online and not only improve literacy and confidence in children, but also increase family wellbeing and bonding through the joy of sharing stories. This kind of tailored support enables us to help prepare children for school and broaden their opportunities in life.
We have a range of roles, ranging from weekly opportunities (for 32 weeks of the year) to a once every 3-week role, both in person and online operating on either a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday from 4.30pm to 7.00pm for in person or from 4.30pm and 6.30pm for online volunteering. Visit here to see an overview of all our roles.
Doorstep Library has opportunities in Hammersmith, Latimer Road, Shepherds Bush, East Acton, Queens Park, Marylebone, Fulham Broadway, Parsons Green, Euston, Kings Cross and many other places across London on. Visit here to see a full list of our locations and timings.
Our application process is a simple but effective process where volunteers register their interest here and then complete an application form. If successful, we invite volunteers to take part in a virtual 45 minute interview and shortly after this, volunteers complete a DBS and provide us with referee contacts. After this, they complete our training which consists of online video modules and a live training session and then start as an official volunteer!
We just ask that volunteers commit to a 9-month commitment. Are enthusiastic and friendly so that they can build good relationships with families, your volunteer partner and the rest of the Doorstep Library staff team. We also ask that volunteers have a comfortable fluency in English.
Visit our website here to find out more and to register your interest. If you have any immediate questions please get in touch with Olivia on olivia@doorsteplibrary.org.uk or call her on 07554741427 and she will be more than happy to help!
