It Takes A Village

ABOUT

It Takes a Village is a community-led project supporting children, young people, and families in Kensington & Chelsea to feel safe, supported, and able to thrive. The project brings together youth organisations, schools, community groups, parents, and the local council to reduce the risks of serious youth violence and exploitation and to increase the opportunities and positive pathways available to young people.

We believe that everyone in a young person’s life has a role to play in creating safety, connection, and belonging. When the community works together, we create stronger foundations and brighter futures.

ITAV Report

The ‘It Takes A Village’ project was initiated in response to community concerns about a rise in serious youth crime and exploitation (SYVE) incidents following the Covid-19 lock downs (March 2020 - December 2021). The project reflects RBKC and the Safer K&C partnership’s commitment to community-led approaches to SYVE reduction and ensures young people, residents and frontline workers have a direct role in shaping services.

ITAV Toolkit

This toolkit was developed through conversations with youth workers working across the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC).

The practitioners who contributed bring a wide range of experience: community youth work, school and PRU settings, violence prevention, specialist provision, frontline delivery, and leadership roles. Some are early in their careers. Others have been working with young people for decades.

Despite these differences, they spoke about working with young people experiencing serious youth violence and exploitation (SYVE) in similar ways.

This toolkit offers frontline practitioners working in the community a space for reflection, shared learning, and support in navigating complex situations

SERVICE MAP

We created the SYVE services map to make support easier to find, understand and access.

The map brings together trusted local organisations, projects and statutory partners into one clear, accessible place. It is designed to reduce confusion, strengthen referrals and ensure that no young person falls through the gaps simply because they did not know where to turn.

By increasing visibility of the support that already exists across our borough, it helps youth workers, schools, community leaders and families to act earlier and more confidently.

When we can see the whole village, we can work together more effectively to keep young people safe and supported.
